29.1. Package Basics

Arctic offers a package feature designed to encourage guests to specific combinations of activities by offering a discount as incentive. This can be particularly useful for day trip outfitters that offer itineraries with a range of activities that will fill a day or a weekend.

For example, imagine that you offer an Apple Tour, an Orange Tour and a Banana Tour. You might define a package in Arctic that offer discounts when guests combine the Apple and Orange tour, as well as a second package when the guests combine all three tours.

When a guest books an Apple Tour, Arctic will look for packages that can be made by booking a second trip. Since there is a package for Apple Tours and Orange Tours, the system will find nearby Orange Tours that meet any criteria specified when the package was defined. Assuming that there are eligible Orange Tours, the guest will be offered an opportunity to add the Orange Tour to their cart and receive a discount (specified as part of the package definition). If the guest does not want to book the Orange Tour, they can checkout directly.

If the guest chooses to add the Orange Tour, Arctic will again check for eligible package definitions that correspond to booking a third trip. If it locates a package definition that includes both the Apple Tour, the Orange Tour and another Activity, it will present this option as well. In this case Arctic will offer the Banana Tour. Again the guest can choose to add the Banana Tour or they can proceed directly to checkout.

If the guest chooses to add the Banana Tour, Arctic will again look in your package definitions to see if there is a package that includes an Apple Tour, an Orange Tour and a Banana Tour along with a fourth activity. If it finds a package that meets these criteria, Arctic will offer these packages as well. In this case, our packages stop with the Banana Tour, so the guest will be taken to the checkout page.

When the guest has finished adding activities, they can checkout and all their selected activities will be in their cart with the defined discounts applied.

It is as easy as apples, oranges, and bananas.

In the next section, we will cover how to setup package definitions.
