33.2. Creating Retail Items

You can create retail items by going to the "Retail" menu on the left hand side and choosing "Manage Items". On the "Browse Retail Items" page, click the green "Create Retail Item" button.

The item form allows configuring a number of pieces of information, such as name, description, image, pricing, vendor details and other pricing information. Much of the information besides the name and price are optional, but help with record keeping.

If you have the e-commerce functionality enabled, you can also provide information regarding online availability, shipping and such that determine if and how the item appears on the online store.

Each retail item represents a type or style of item that is sold. Within that item, you may have multiple UPC codes if you sell variations on the item (e.g., different sizes for clothing, different color for clothing, etc). This helps you keep similar products under one "retail item", but track their inventory separately.

By default, each item will have one UPC code. For the UPC code, you must specify the price, and may optionally specify a barcode, a vendor cost and other details. In the next section, you can learn about adding more UPC codes to the same item.

It is recommended (although not required) to add an actual barcode number to the UPC code, to help in tracking inventory and completing transactions using a barcode scanner.

There are two options for configuring the barcodes:

1. Manufacturer Provided Barcodes

If the product has a barcode from the manufacturer you can select the UPC-A type and associate the existing barcode. Either type the UPC-A number shown on the tag, or click the "Scan" button next to the "Code" field and then scan the item's barcode.

2. Arctic Generated Barcodes

If the item does not come with a barcode, you can create your own by selecting the "Code 39" type, and enter an item number. The item number can be any numbers and letters, but should be unique to the item and should contain 3-18 characters. Once you have selected a code for the item, Arctic can generate barcode labels for the items from the "View Retail Item" page, or from any purchase orders that contain the item.

Once your retail item is created, Arctic will take you to the "View Retail Item" page for the item you just created, so that you can adjust the inventory and print barcodes.

In the next section, you can learn how to add more UPCs (product variants) to the same item.
