30.12. Cross-Promoting Items

When a guest is booking online, Arctic offers a few ways to draw their attention to other trips, rentals, services or items.

If you have clearly defined sets of activities that receive discounted pricing, then the package feature is the recommended approach. Packages allow you to define rule for between two and five activities and an accompanying discount. When booking, guests will be encouraged to add other activities if the subsequent combination will constitue a package.

For those items that do not qualify as packages (either because there is no discount, or if the aim is to simply draw attention to other activities and services), then you can use the cross-promote feature.

Setup

You can define cross-promotional items either at the trip, rental item or e-commerce item level, or you can define cross-promotional items at the business group level. When defining a cross-promotional item, you will select another landing page or section of the guest-facing site where guests can find a similar or related item that they may be interested in.

Setting relevant cross-promotional items for trips, rental items or e-commerce items. To configure specific cross-promotional items for a trip, rental item or e-commerce item:

  1. Edit the trip type, trip, rental item or e-commerce item for which you want to define cross-promotional items.
  2. Under the "Online" settings section (for example, the "Online" tab of the trip type editor), look for the "cross-promote item" section.
  3. Click the plus symbol to add a new item to cross-promote.
  4. Select an item to cross-promote and provide any other optional details (for more information, see below).

Setting relevant cross-promotion items for business groups. To configure specific cross-promotional items for business groups (which will be used for all trips and items contained within that business group):

  1. Go to "Settings."
  2. Select the appropriate business group.
  3. Open the "Store" section and find the setting labeled "Cross-Promote Items."
  4. Click the pencil to bring up the item selector.
  5. Click the plus symbol to add a new item to cross-promote.
  6. Select an item to cross-promote and provide any other optional details (for more information, see below).

Selecting and configuring an item to cross-promote. In the instructions above, you need to select an item to cross-promote. Often times, this means linking to another landing page or category of the e-commerce site where guests can find related and interesting items that they may wish to add to their cart before checkout.

To select and configure an item to cross-promote:

  1. Use the tabs across the top of the window to browse different categories of items. In the appropriate tab, click a link to select the item to cross-promote.

  2. Once you select the item to cross-promote, you will notice empty fields for a title and description. You can leave these blank and Arctic will automatically fill them in. For example, if you are cross-promoting a trip type landing page, the system will use the trip type online name and online description. Or if you want to use custom language to draw guests attention to the item (e.g., providing specific details about how it relates to what they already booked), you can fill in a custom title and description.

Appearance to guest

Once a guest adds an item to their cart (either a trip, a rental or a e-commerce item), Arctic will determine if there are any applicable cross-promotion items. It will look at the definition for the trip or rental item booked, as well as in the containing business group and all parent business groups. It will keep looking until it finds up to six unique items to cross-promote (this number may vary on mobile devices).

The guest will then be shown an interstitial page before being taken to the checkout page, drawing their attention to the relevant cross-promotional items. They can either click to browse the item mentioned, or they can proceed to checkout.
