4.3. Collapsible & Conditional Fields
To help make your forms more understandable and streamlined, Arctic supports two specialty field containers. They are Collapsible and Conditional field containers.
Collapsible field containers allow you to combine a set of fields under one heading that will be "collapsed" by default. The guest or the reservationist would click on the heading for the collapsible container to expand the container and answer the included questions. The following images illustrate a collapsible container on the built-in Customer form.
Conditional field containers, allow you to tell Arctic which additional fields should be displayed if a guest answers a previously defined field with a specific answer. This allows you to only display the next questions that are relative to how a guest previously answered the preceding question. For example, if you ask the question "Do you take any medications?", you can set a field to be displayed that will ask the guest to list their medications if they answered "Yes". The following images illustrate the conditional field container on the built-in Customer form.
To create collapsible or conditional field containers, on the "Edit Forms" pages, choose "Containers" from the green "+Add Field" button and then select your preferred container.
If you selected "Collapsible" you will be asked to add a "Label" to the collapsible container. This will be the heading the guests and backend users will see that will help them identify the questions contained within the container. In our example, we will set the label as "Boat Preferences".
After setting a label for the collapsible container, click "Close" to close the edit window.
Once the label has been added your "Edit Form" page will look as follows:
Notice, the line indexes illustrated in the image above. The outside line is the index or boundary of the main form you are working with. Also notice, there is a line index or boundary for the newly created collapsible container. These indexes will help you easily tell where the fields you are creating are arranged on your form i.e. on the main form or inside one of the specialty containers on your form.
Now that we have added the collapsible container we need to create the fields we wish to add to it. To do this, you will click the green "+Add Field" button and select the type of field you wish to add to your container.
Note: By default all fields that are added will automatically be added to the main form body. To get the field into a specialty container you must drag the new field into the container. The index lines will help you tell whether or not your field is in the container. If the line of the container does not extend down next to the field it is not inside the container. The following image illustrates a field outside of the container.
If the field is inside the container the index line will extend down next to the field as shown here:
Notice, in the above image, the index line for the container now extends to include the new field. This indicates the new field is now inside the container as desired.
Conditional containers are added in a similar manner but before adding a conditional container, you should add the question that will be the test for the conditional container. In this case we added a "Do you take any medications?" field.
Notice again that the index line for our collapsible container for "Boat Preferences" does not extend to include the new medication question we have added.
Now we are ready to add a the conditional container that will hold the additional questions we wish to have answered if the guest answers "Yes" to the "Do you take any medications?" question. Again to add a container, you will click the green "+Add Field" button and select "Containers" and choose your preferred container.
In this case, we are selecting "Conditional". When a "Conditional" container is chosen, you will be asked to specify a field and then enter the values that should trigger the conditional questions you will add to the container. For this example, we chose the new "Do you take any medications?" field for the "Field" and entered "Yes" in the "Values" box.
Important: The "values" entered must match the options available for answer precisely i.e. they must match the same capitalization and spelling. For "Yes/No" fields the values should be capitalized otherwise your conditional containers will not work properly.
Helpful Hint: When creating conditional containers it is best to select fields for the conditional answer that have pre-defined answer choices. The best options are "Select Option" fields and "Yes/No" fields.
Once the "Field" has been selected and the "Values" are entered for the conditional container, click "Close" to close the edit window. Your form will now look as shown here:
Again take note of the index lines. The main form line extends to include all of the fields and containers on the form. The collapsible container includes the "What kind of boat would you like to use on your trip?" field and the newly created conditional container is currently empty.
As with adding fields to a collapsible container, you will create each field you would like to add to the container. By default these will all be added to the main form and you will then drag them into the conditional container.
In the image below, you can see the new field we added to our conditional container. The "Please list your medications and dosages" field will be shown only if the "Do you take any medications?" field is answered with "Yes". Notice, the index lines also clearly show which fields are part of the specialty containers and which are part of the main form.
When working with the specialty containers, you can add as many fields as you would like to any given container. You can also add additional specialty containers and put them inside each other, i.e. a collapsible container can contain a conditional container and vice versa.
