7.7. Coding Open Ended Fields
Evaluation summaries will analyze all questions to provide succinct summaries, such as charts and other analysis. But the system has trouble analyzing open ended responses, beyond looking for frequent words. To assist with this, Arctic provides the option to "code" open ended fields, by attaching keywords to each response summarizing the primary message. Arctic will then use these keywords to create graphs and analysis.
On the Summary report, open ended questions will have a button to "Code" responses that is color coded based on the status. If the button is green, then all responses have been coded. Otherwise, there are pending responses to be coded.
Clicking the "Start Coding" or "Resume Coding" button will bring up those responses that have not yet been coded. You can see the raw response that the guest provided on the left-hand side, and can select existing or add new keywords on the right-hand side. Use the interface to select the keywords that best summarize the guest's response.
Once you have gone through all responses, you can rerun the summary report and see a graph depicting the distribution of keywords, allowing more careful analysis of the data.
